ABA Online Bird Photo Quiz 145

Answer

The quiz bird’s long legs and scrunched-up neck while in flight should take us to the Ardeidae with fair rapidity. The very long legs rules out all of the short-legged herons (such as night-herons and Green Heron), while the lack of white on the underparts rules out most egrets, Western Reef-Heron, Tricolored Heron, and juvenile Little Blue Heron. The bright yellow eye staring out of a plain, dark face with no suggestion of white rules out Great Blue Heron, thus leaving us with Reddish Egret and adult Little Blue Heron.

To me, the most striking feature of this bird is that staring yellow eye. Unfortunately, both remaining species have yellow eyes, so the color, in and of itself, is of little use. However, that eye contrasts strongly with the entirely dark face, which is of use, because one species has black facial skin (creating strong contrast) during part of its life, while the other has paler facial skin at all times. Once in the correct species, the bird’s longer wings and relatively longer legs help us to confirm that ID.

I took this picture of an immature dark-morph Reddish Egret at Smith Point, Chambers Co., TX, on 21 August 2013.
