ABA Photo Quiz

ABA Online Bird Photo Quiz 156

This month’s solution will take a much different tack than is typical for this quiz, as it will be presented much more pictorially.  I mean, at a 1000 words per picture, we can replace an awful lot of words!

Presumably, this month’s quiz subject is a waterbird and, from comparison to the stems behind it, seemingly a sizable thing.  The next task may simply be figuring what parts of the bird we are seeing; there’s certainly nothing as obvious as a head visible here!  Because of the orientation of the feathers in the apparent middle of the chunk of bird that we can see (some of which have white shaft streaks) – the upper feathers bases are covered by the feathers below them, this section of the bird must be on the underparts, unless it’s upside-down.  In fact, we are looking right up the bird’s vent.  That makes the shadowed part above that section of bird the tail (something is sticking out shadowing that section).  Then those big and broad feathers at the very top of what we can see of the bird must be some of the inner flight feathers (tertials and/or inner secondaries), which makes that part on the right side of the bird with those patches of white the right wing.

The next picture has the bird turned 180˚ and we are looking at its back.

And then with its head finally out of the water.

And then the field-guide view

I took these pictures of a Limpkin at Donegan Park, Largo, Pinellas Co., FL, on 8 March 2015.  See eBird checklist.
