ABA Photo Quiz

ABA Online Bird Photo Quiz 158

Answer

Ah, one of those headless birds one sees all over the place; at least in the chimping screen on the back of digital SLR cameras!  This headless quiz bird looks to be sooty gray nearly all over, with at least the suggestion of a white trailing edge to the secondaries.  It also seems to have little or no tail, though by design or accident, we may not know.  It certainly has some big and oddly shaped feet!

While the water may well be a hint to the bird’s identity, we shouldn’t go running willy-nilly down that track, because lots of non-waterbirds can be seen flying low over water.  However, those odd feet might be another clue that the beast is a waterbird.  So, we might want to begin down the waterbird track, but be prepared to back up if we find ourselves in a corner.

In fact, those lobed feet are an excellent clue that our quiz bird is a waterbird.  Since they are lobed, not webbed, we can rule out all of the waterfowl, tubenoses, totipalms (that bunch of early-in-the-field-guide waterbirds that have even the hind toe attached to webbing, such as cormorants, pelicans, boobies), avocets, gulls, terns, and alcids (!!).  Additionally, since they are lobed, those feet also rule out gallinules.  Ha!  An excellent option-culling feature that, by removing various and sundry tubenoses, gallinules, and alcids, makes our task considerably easier.  In fact, I had planned that at this point we would have just a single option remaining – the most commonly seen rail species in the ABA area, but I forgot to put the caveat in the picture about the bird not being an ABA code 5 species.  Hopefully, no one went there and I won’t have to commit seppuku.

I took this picture of an American Coot (not a Eurasian Coot) at John S. Taylor Park, Pinellas Co., FL, on 29 March 2015.
