ABA Photo Quiz

ABA Online Bird Photo Quiz 166

Answer

While enjoying the raptor flight past a hawkwatch on a ridge, a large, dark bird makes an appearance. Is it an eagle, particularly the hoped-for Golden Eagle?  Why doesn’t it seem to have a head?  While we might appreciate seeing more of the bird, as for photo quizzes everywhere, we have enough information to make a firm identification.

First off, though vultures are usually more common at most hawkwatches, particularly in the East, than are eagles, we’ll see if we can turn this month’s quiz bird into an eagle.  Ruling out Bald Eagle is fairly straightforward, as no matter the plumage of the bird, Balds always show at least some white in the tail.  Additionally, the wings seem too narrow and a bit too pointed for the bird to be the plank-winged Bald Eagle.  We can also rule out most age classes of Golden Eagle for the same initial reason that the bird shows no white on the tail.  However, even adult Goldens show some paler markings on the basal half of the tail that would certainly be visible in this picture if that were the quiz bird’s ID.  Goldens also have a blackish trailing edge to the dark brown wings, while our quiz bird’s secondaries are all the same color from base to nearly the very tip, which is whitish.  Various dark-morph buteos can be ruled out on one or more of tail color and pattern, color and pattern of remiges, wing shape, and tail shape and length.

As our quiz bird shows something of a dihedral, we might be inclined to call it a Turkey Vulture and look for the next bird.  However, Black Vultures frequently show a dihedral, usually shallow, so we’ll have to use the various shape and plumage features that distinguish the two, particularly Black Vulture’s white shafts to the outer primaries, short tail, and wide wings.

I took this picture of a Turkey Vulture at Lake Pasadena, Pasco County, Florida, on 26 December 2016 during the East Pasco Christmas Bird Count.
