Ben Coulter started birding in Erie, PA, where he quickly developed a fervent obsession with bird identification, especially shorebirds, waterbirds, and gulls. Ben has been utterly fascinated by all aspects of biology and nature since early childhood. He is a firm advocate of traveling as often as circumstances allow, and appreciates both the immensity of boreal wilderness and the spectacular biodiversity of the tropics. During spring and autumn, he enjoys listening for nocturnal migrants and watching birds in active migration. Shortening day lengths trigger a seasonal change in preferred habitat, as he is inexplicably compelled to sift through large mixed flocks of larids at landfills. In warmer months, his focus largely switches to invertebrates, especially Odonata and Coleoptera. Other interests include art, photography, music, herpetology, botany, and literature. Zookeeping, avian survey work, and bioacoustics are a few of the various fields he has had the privilege to gain experience from. Ben currently lives in the Pittsburgh area with his wife Cara and their son Tristan.
